Original Concept by: Me with some partial influences from Doom 3.
Software used: 3DS Max 9, Adobe Photoshop CS2
Description: Just wanted to make another standard game prop, although the design of the crate ended up being a little different than the sterotypical one.
Essentially to open the crate you enter a code on the keypad near the front, then the locks on the sides of the front part of the crate open.
Then you can just take the top off. I envisioned this crate to be used for sensitive/top secret cargo like a warhead.
My workflow
consisted of creating a high poly model for the Normal map (then creating the low poly one) and texturing the other maps in Photoshop.
Here is the high poly model (225,856 polys) that I used for the Normal Map (rendered in 3DSmax) and below is the low poly one. In this case the low poly model was created first.
